Description:

DAYS/HOURS: to be determined (approximately 22 hours per week)

PAY RATE LEVEL: One (1) $16.30 - $18.50 per hour

REPORTS TO: Store Manager

SUPPORTS: Front End and Grocery Departments

Purpose

The Store Associate performs cashiering, stocking, and other store maintenance tasks with accuracy and efficiency while providing customers and co-workers with friendly and helpful service.

Essential Job Duties

CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide exceptional customer service as identified in Feather River Food Cooperative Service Standards
  • Take the initiative to improve knowledge of Feather River Food Cooperatives product line and demonstrate the ability to answer or research customer questions.
  • Promptly respond to customer inquiries, comments, and complaints in a professional manner, with manager assistance when needed.
  • Alert the manager on duty of issues affecting product quality, service or equipment malfunctions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

CASHIERING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain knowledge of all front end and POS/register procedures.
  • Operate cash registers/POS with accuracy and proficiency.
  • Understand the elements of Co-op membership sufficiently to educate customers and process membership transactions.
  • Help to maintain the cleanliness of equipment, surfaces, floors, etc.
  • Understand and follow the procedures for processing special orders.

GROCERY RECEIVING & STOCKING

  • Receive product according to guidelines ensuring that all invoices are coded accurately to allow for proper tracking and payment processing as needed.
  • Ensure that shelves and end caps are properly stocked, rotated, labeled, and faced following department standards and according to priorities set by managers, for any and all departments.
  • Organize back stock as necessary to assist in smooth flow of product to sales floor.
  • Maintain the sales floor and stockroom to ensure that work and retail areas are clean and uncluttered.
  • Receive deliveries when scheduled.
  • Maintain accurate prices and labels on floor display items.
  • Complete all required opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of designated shifts.
  • Thoroughly read all current procedures in the storage/prep area and comply with all the listed requirements and responsibilities during each shift.
  • Adhere to the safety policies of the department and store, including the proper use of all equipment, and notify the Operations Manager of any irregularities or safety concerns.

PRODUCE STOCKING AND DELIVERY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in receiving produce deliveries and check supplier invoices as directed. Take notes on the quality of unacceptable produce as well as missing or mis-picked items as directed.
  • Prep, cull, rotate and restock produce cases several times daily to ensure highest quality and fullness of display to meet customer demand.
  • Restock produce as needed and adjust the produce display when items are out of stock in order to maintain a full appearance.
  • Maintain accurate prices and labels on floor display items using guidelines set by the Produce Buying Coordinator.
  • Carefully and attentively handle and hydrate greens.
  • Maintain floral and plant displays.
  • Maintain produce department standards of cleanliness with daily cleaning of baskets, sales floor, displays and storage/prep areas.
  • Complete all required opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of designated shifts.
  • Thoroughly read all current procedures in the storage/prep area and comply with all the listed requirements and responsibilities during each shift.
  • Adhere to the safety policies of the department and store, including the proper use of all equipment, and notify the Store Manager of any irregularities or safety concerns.
  • Participate in produce case cleanings, walk-in cleanings, and re-sets.

TEAMWORK RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide excellent service to peers and co-workers; demonstrate a willingness and ability to cooperate and communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and outside contacts.
  • Support team goals and objectives.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Communicate issues with and support fellow team members.

STOREWIDE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Abide by dress code and all Co-op policies and procedures as specified in the FRFC Employee Handbook.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in assigned projects.
  • Read staff notebook and notices regularly.
  • Adhere to safety and security policies and rules. Promptly report potential security threats, safety hazards, and accidents to a manager.

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

  • Ability to converse with employees and customers. Must be able to exchange accurate information while working the store floor and communicating with employees and customers. 
  • Vision ability requirements include the ability to inspect, identify, observe and assess the situational work environment both close up and at a distance. Utilize color and shape to recognize products. 

Scheduling Requirements

The scheduling availability described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. All employees must be available to work weekends, evenings, early mornings, holidays, and high demand seasons. Employees will be provided a recurring base schedule at the time of hire, this will be used to determine the employees employment benefit status. Additionally, employees will be scheduled up to 40 hours per work week as needed to provide store coverage. Schedules will be produced one month in advance and provided to employees at that time. Employees are subject to adhering to all scheduling, vacation, sick, and attendance related policies not mentioned here. Full disclosure of policies is available upon request.

Work Environment

  • Fast paced, physically-demanding work environment.
  • Occasional job related travel for training, meetings, and/or events.
  • Work near moving mechanical parts (i.e. store equipment, tools, etc.)
  • Ability to work in an environment with moderate to loud noises (i.e. equipment and machinery)
  • Crowded work spaces. Computer sharing is sometimes required.
  • Can involve work in high precarious places (i.e. ladders, ladder work.)
  • Ability to work in cold, wet conditions

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Previous cashiering and/or retail experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills desired.
  • Knowledge of natural foods and products desired.
  • Excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Friendly, courteous and professional behavior.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and cooperative abilities.
  • Experience with retail and/or natural foods operations
  • Outstanding customer service skills and aptitude, with demonstrated appreciation of diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Aptitude with numbers and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle multiple demands, work under time pressures, and meet deadlines
